Study finds brain decision-making begins earlier than thought

Researchers at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign have found that decision-making starts in early sensory regions of the brain rather than only in higher areas. The study, published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, challenges traditional models of brain function. It also suggests ways to improve artificial intelligence systems.

The research was led by electrical and computer engineering professor Yurii Vlasov. Scientists recorded neural activity in mice navigating a virtual reality corridor while making perceptual decisions. They detected decision-related activity in the primary somatosensory cortex, an early sensory processing area.

The findings indicate that higher brain regions influence early sensory areas through rapid feedback loops. This dynamic process replaces the older view of information flowing in one direction through a strict hierarchy.

Vlasov said the team wants to learn from a billion years of evolution to make AI more effective and less power-hungry. The study does not offer a direct blueprint for new AI but provides insights into brain architecture.

Next steps include examining the timing of brain signals and developing tools to measure neural activity in greater detail.

A study by researchers at McGill University and Yale School of Medicine suggests that learning—and later retaining—new speech patterns depends more on brain areas that process sound and bodily sensation than on the motor cortex regions that control speech movements. The work was published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

Research on mice indicates that the majority of neurons respond to multiple task elements rather than focusing on single functions. The findings come from analysis of brain activity across more than 100 mice performing a decision-making task.

Researchers at Georgetown University have found that the brain physically reorganizes itself with enough training, allowing people to perform certain tasks simultaneously rather than switching rapidly between them.

A burst of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine in a key brain region helped mice abandon a previously rewarded choice after an expected reward failed to appear, according to a study that mapped chemical signals in the striatum during reversal learning.

Researchers at Baylor College of Medicine have found that the brain continues advanced language processing even during general anesthesia. Patients under unconsciousness distinguished parts of speech and anticipated upcoming words in stories. The results, published in Nature, challenge prior views on consciousness and cognition.
