As the 2026 biking season approaches, manufacturers are introducing a range of A2-compliant sub-500cc motorcycles aimed at new riders and those seeking manageable options. Triumph's successful 400cc models have inspired further variants, while brands like Hero, CFMoto, BMW, and Suzuki offer fresh entries in various styles. These bikes emphasize affordability, novice-friendly performance, and diverse riding types from roadsters to off-roaders.
The sub-500cc category has gained prominence for its appeal to recently qualified riders and those downsizing from larger machines. In 2024, British manufacturer Triumph launched the Street 400 and Scrambler 400 X, both 400cc models producing 40bhp and priced around £5000. These bikes combined approachable handling with stylish design, leading to strong UK sales among beginners and experienced riders alike. Building on this, Triumph introduces two new variants for 2026: the flat-track-inspired Tracker 400 at £5745 and the café racer Thruxton 400 at £5995, the latter featuring a single-cylinder engine boosted to 41bhp from 38bhp, along with a fine-handling chassis, LCD display, and USB port.
Other brands are expanding the segment. Honda's GB350S debuted last year, while Royal Enfield offers a lineup of 350-450cc machines, including the limited-edition Goan Classic 350 for 2026. BMW enters with the F 450 GS, a 420cc parallel-twin adventure bike producing 48bhp, focused on off-road capability with optional 'Easy ride' clutch system, priced at £6990. CFMoto's 450 MT, at £5699, is a 449cc parallel-twin adventure model with 42bhp, 175kg weight, wire wheels, and a four-year warranty. Hero's Hunk 440, the Indian brand's first UK offering at £3699, targets younger riders with its 440cc single-cylinder engine delivering 27bhp and contemporary styling. Suzuki revives its DR-Z400 as the DR-Z4SM supermoto for £7999, retaining a 398cc single-cylinder engine now Euro5+ compliant, with 17-inch wheels and street tires.
These models, spanning roadster, adventure, café racer, and supermoto styles, start from £3699 and cater to budgets and preferences, though some like the Suzuki carry higher prices. Production for the Suzuki faced delays, arriving in 2026 after announcement in November 2024.
