A road accident at Malaha Junction in Webuye claimed 15 lives and injured more than 21 people on the morning of March 10, 2026. According to Western Region Traffic Police Commander Walter Cheboren, a truck lost control and rammed into a public service vehicle (PSV) and a boda boda motorcycle, causing a chain collision. Witnesses described the truck veering into the main road and smashing into multiple vehicles, with bodies scattered on the roadway before rescue teams arrived.
National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang'ula visited the accident site and victims' families on March 11, pledging to push for stricter road safety laws. “To Members of Parliament, we must tighten the rules and regulations governing the transport sector,” Wetang'ula said. He criticized the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) for needing to swiftly remove dangerous drivers and urged courts to impose severe penalties. “The National Transport and Safety Authority must act swiftly to ensure such dangerous drivers are removed from our roads. Our courts must also take the growing recklessness on our roads seriously; those who endanger lives must face the full force of the law,” he added.
Wetang'ula facilitated the transfer of two critically injured patients from Webuye County Referral Hospital to Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH) for specialized care. Chief Doctor David Wanikina confirmed the two patients are males requiring emergency treatment.
President William Ruto has promised government assistance for affected families and the injured, with the county government covering medical bills. A funeral committee has been formed led by Webuye East MP Marthin Wanyonyi Pepela, Bungoma Woman Representative Catherine Wambilianga, Deputy Governor Janepher Chemtai Mbatiany, and other local officials. A fundraiser is scheduled for Sunday, March 15, followed by a joint requiem Mass on Monday, March 16, in Webuye Town.
One affected resident, Isaac, who lost his wife, expressed hope that his family of three—including his father and brother with broken bones—will recover and be discharged from hospital.
