Windsor chess challenge draws nearly 1,500 young competitors

Nearly 1,500 young chess players gathered at the Ciociaro Club in Windsor for the 26th annual Windsor Chess Challenge. The two-day tournament, which began on Tuesday, featured students from 90 schools in Windsor and Essex County, along with homeschooled children. Organizer Kathleen Westlake highlighted the event's growing popularity and the participants' enthusiasm.

The Windsor Chess Challenge, held at the Ciociaro Club, attracted almost 1,500 competitors this week in its 26th year. Students from 90 schools across Windsor and Essex County, including homeschooled kids, participated in the two-day event that started on Tuesday.

Tournament organizer Kathleen Westlake described the atmosphere as vibrant. “Every year, the energy of the kids is over the top. They are so excited to come in,” she told the Windsor Star. She noted the varying levels of dedication among participants: “Some of them are so dedicated, they wear a vest and a tie. Some kids are just happy to have a day off, but some of them are just so driven to perform well. It’s amazing.”

Since its inception in 1999, the event has expanded significantly, becoming a sold-out affair. Registration opens on January 1 each year and fills to capacity in less than two weeks, with schools placed on a waiting list immediately. Westlake emphasized that children as young as four years old are welcome, provided they know how to play chess and receive coaching. “Some of these kids, at four and five, are amazing players,” she said.

Coaching comes from private instructors or school programs, underscoring chess's rising status. “This has become such a competitive sport in line with athletics,” Westlake observed. She presents the John Coleman Legacy Trophy to the winning school annually and has seen chess pennants displayed in gymnasiums alongside those for traditional sports. “The fact that they’re elevating chess to be equal with athletics, it impresses me and it makes me very proud,” she added.

Participants play eight games, with those earning six or more points qualifying for playoffs on April 4 back at the Ciociaro Club, where trophies will be awarded. “For some of them, this is the best way that they can represent their school, through a cerebral contest,” Westlake noted.
