One year after the Air India flight AI 171 crash in Ahmedabad on June 12 2025 families continue to cope with loss while the lone survivor awaits the final investigation report.
The Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner crashed minutes after takeoff from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport killing 241 of the 242 people on board and 19 on the ground. Vishwas Kumar Ramesh the sole survivor seated in 11A lost his brother Ajay and said he will have to live with what he went through each day. He hopes the final probe report will help explain the incident and prevent future occurrences.
Aakash a 13-year-old boy died on the ground after the plane struck nearby hostel buildings. His mother Sita suffered severe burns while trying to save him and treatment for her injuries continues one year later. The family plans to travel to Varanasi to immerse his ashes in the Ganga following traditional rituals.
Air India has returned identified personal belongings to most families though 15 declined to accept any items. The airline paid interim compensation of Rs 25 lakh to 96 per cent of victims families and ex-gratia assistance of Rs 1 crore to 91 per cent through the AI 171 Memorial and Welfare Trust.
