University of North Texas sophomore Alex Huang shot a 3-under 69 to take a four-shot lead in the individual standings at the Compadres Collegiate tournament. The Mean Green team sits three strokes behind leader UTRGV entering the final round. Huang's performance featured 11 birdies over two days at Iberostar Playa Paraiso Golf Club in Playa del Carmen, Mexico.
The Compadres Collegiate entered its final round on Tuesday with University of North Texas golfer Alex Huang holding a commanding four-shot advantage in the individual competition. On Monday, the sophomore from Plano fired a 3-under 69, improving on his opening 72 to reach 3-under for the tournament. Huang started strong, reaching 3-under by the front nine's end before adding three birdies on the back nine, totaling 11 birdies for the week.
Huang, who has four career top-10 finishes, seeks his first collegiate title. His teammates also contributed solidly, keeping UNT in contention for the team championship. The Mean Green scored 299-294 for 17-over, placing second, just three strokes behind UTRGV's 14-over (299-291). UTSA followed at 24-over (292-308).
Other UNT players in the top 20 included Noah Blaickner (tied for 10th at 5-over after a 75), Mitchell Maier (tied for 17th at 7-over with a 74, highlighted by an eagle on the seventh hole—the team's first this spring), and Blake Keen (tied for 19th at 8-over with a 76). Rayhan Latief sat 26th at 11-over after a 76, boosted by back-to-back birdies on holes 17 and 18. Individual competitor Joe Stover shot an 81 for 16-over, tying for 42nd.
Western Carolina, meanwhile, slipped to sixth despite trimming four strokes off its first-round score. The final round tees off at 7:30 a.m. CT Tuesday at Iberostar Playa Paraiso Golf Club, with live scoring available online.
