Alireza Firouzja, one of chess's most dynamic young talents, will return to the Norway Chess tournament in 2026. The French-Iranian grandmaster, known for his rapid rise in the sport, adds significant star power to the event in Oslo. Firouzja has previously competed there four times, finishing as runner-up in 2020 and 2021.
Alireza Firouzja, widely regarded as one of the most dynamic players of his generation, has been announced as a participant in Norway Chess 2026. The tournament, set to take place from May 25 to June 5 at Deichman Bjorvika in Oslo, features a six-player double round-robin format that brings together top male and female players.
Firouzja made history as the youngest player to reach a 2800 Elo rating, a milestone achieved by only a select few. He earned the grandmaster title at age 14 and became the second-youngest to cross the 2700 mark at 16. His achievements include qualifying twice for the FIDE Candidates Tournament: first by winning the FIDE Grand Swiss in 2021 at 18, and later via the FIDE rating list in January 2024.
Norway Chess is familiar territory for Firouzja, who has participated in four previous editions and delivered strong performances, including runner-up finishes in 2020 and 2021. "I am looking forward to competing against the best chess players in the world at Norway Chess 2026 in Oslo," Firouzja said, as quoted by Norway Chess.
