Apple tests four frame styles for smart glasses

Apple is testing at least four different frame styles for upcoming smart glasses to rival Meta's Ray-Bans, according to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman. The designs include rectangular and oval options in various colors. An announcement could come as early as late 2026, with a release in 2027.

Apple's design team is prototyping four frame styles for its smart glasses, internally code-named N50. These include a large rectangular frame similar to Ray-Ban Wayfarers, a slimmer rectangular design like the glasses worn by CEO Tim Cook, a larger oval or circular frame, and a smaller oval or circular option. The glasses will come in colors such as black, ocean blue, and light brown, Gurman reported Sunday in his Bloomberg newsletter. Apple is also exploring a distinctive camera setup with vertically oriented oval lenses surrounded by lights to set its product apart from competitors. The smart glasses will feature cameras for photos and videos, microphones, and speakers for phone calls, notifications, music, and integration with Siri. They are designed to sync seamlessly with the iPhone, enabling editing and sharing within Apple's ecosystem, and may launch alongside an improved Siri in iOS 27. Gurman said Apple could announce the glasses by the end of 2026 or early 2027, with shipments starting later in 2027. The move comes as the smart glasses market grew 139% year-over-year in the second half of 2025, according to Counterpoint Research, largely driven by Meta's Ray-Ban models, which now better support prescription lenses and customizable fits. Apple did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
