Benjamin Hill visits Lake County Captains' ballpark in Eastlake

Benjamin Hill's Baseball Traveler newsletter highlights the unique features of the High-A Lake County Captains' Classic Auto Group Park. During a recent evening game, broadcaster Logan Potosky hosted a special broadcast from Toilet Row while Jae Canetti attempted to tackle the massive Moby Dick Sandwich.

For Cleveland Guardians fans, Minor League Baseball options abound nearby. The Triple-A Columbus Clippers sit two hours south, the Double-A Akron RubberDucks are 40 minutes away, and the High-A Lake County Captains are the closest, based in Eastlake. Classic Auto Group Park is just 18 miles from Progressive Field, reachable via I-90E, maintaining a nautical theme near Lake Erie.

The ballpark features Mokoro, a bat dog owned by Victoria Brady of Mission Empawthy. Mokoro retrieves bats and balls and delivers food to fans in Toilet Row, a Roto-Rooter-sponsored seating area.

On this evening, Toilet Row hosted two fans and broadcaster Logan Potosky for an outdoor broadcast. In the center, Jae Canetti served as Designated Eater, taking on the Moby Dick Sandwich due to the author's gluten-free diet. Canetti, a Cleveland resident who graduated from Wake Forest University and works on a Department of Energy green energy project, first connected with Hill a decade ago as a young baseball writer in Virginia.

The sandwich includes 16 fish patties, 37 pickles, four slices of American cheese, lettuce, mystery spices, and tartar sauce, with Goldfish crackers in a mini helmet as a side. Potosky asked for Canetti's impressions of the 'big behemoth.'

"Growing up, my mom used to tell me I was a very hungry boy," Canetti replied. "I think we have to reset those expectations. I'm getting through 25 percent of this if I’m lucky. … Tell my mom I love her if I deteriorate from here."

Without napkins or drinks, Canetti dove in. Two innings later, he said, "It’s a primal experience. I'm picking up full fish patties with my bare hands and they're disintegrating on me. I feel like I'm doing a bad thing for the overall fish population. There's a fish crisis going on right now, and I am not helping the cause here."

Potosky interjected, "Here's a fly ball to right-center field."

Canetti felt the sandwich seemed to repopulate as he ate but took home leftovers.
