Bruins recall Billy Sweezey on emergency basis

The Boston Bruins have recalled defenseman Billy Sweezey from their AHL affiliate in Providence on an emergency basis. This move comes as the team places defenseman Henri Jokiharju on non-roster status due to a family matter. The announcement was made by general manager Don Sweeney on January 18.

Boston Bruins general manager Don Sweeney announced on January 18 that the team has recalled 29-year-old defenseman Billy Sweezey from the Providence Bruins on an emergency basis. At the same time, the Bruins designated defenseman Henri Jokiharju as non-roster due to a family matter.

Sweezey, a 6-foot-1, 202-pound native of Hanson, Massachusetts, has had a solid season in the American Hockey League with Providence. In 34 games this year, he has recorded one goal and 10 assists for a total of 11 points. Over his career, Sweezey has appeared in 303 AHL games across stints with Providence, Cleveland, and Wilkes-Barre/Scranton, accumulating seven goals and 44 assists for 51 points.

His NHL experience is limited but notable. Sweezey has played in nine career games with the Columbus Blue Jackets, where he tallied one assist. He originally signed with Columbus as a free agent in March 2022.

This recall addresses an immediate need for the Bruins, who are navigating roster adjustments amid personal circumstances for Jokiharju. Sweezey's versatility on the blue line could provide depth as the team continues its season.
