During the top of the sixth inning, MLB's No. 1 prospect Konnor Griffin hit a 109.1 mph line drive to right field. Bryce Harper, conducting an in-game interview from the Phillies dugout with NBC Sports Philadelphia's Tom McCarthy and Ruben Amaro Jr., immediately commented on the play.
"He's gonna be a stud, man," Harper said.
Griffin, a right-handed shortstop from Mississippi, was selected by the Pirates in the first round of the 2024 Draft. In his debut professional season, he advanced from Single-A to High-A to Double-A, posting a .333/.415/.527 slash line with 21 home runs and 65 stolen bases over 122 games. He often faced older competition, including opponents averaging 4.5 years his senior at Double-A.
Harper's praise echoes the hype surrounding his own early career. At 18, Harper debuted in Spring Training after just nine pro games, slashing .389/.450/.556 in 18 Grapefruit League at-bats for the Nationals. In his age-19 season, he began at Triple-A Syracuse before a late April call-up to the majors.
Harper expressed hope for Griffin's quick progression. "Obviously, I don't play for the Pirates, but I hope they let him move through the organization pretty quickly and let him get to the big leagues," he said.
Griffin has already shown promise in spring training, impressing teammates during live batting practice and expected to receive ample game opportunities. Reflecting on his own accelerated path, Harper offered advice: "Just be yourself and have fun, enjoy the game." He added, "He's here for a reason."
