A 52-year-old autorickshaw driver died when a compound wall collapsed onto his vehicle in Bengaluru’s Vijayanagar area on Friday amid heavy rain. The incident occurred near the Vijayanagar Club, close to a swimming pool.
Shivaboraiah, a resident of Attiguppe, was driving his autorickshaw after dropping his mother and wife at a hospital entrance. He had moved to the next lane to avoid traffic when the wall gave way and crushed the vehicle.
Passers-by attempted to rescue him but Shivaboraiah died at the scene. Police said rain appears to have weakened the structure next to the swimming pool, though a detailed probe is needed to confirm the cause.
The Vijayanagar police have registered a complaint and will file an unnatural death report. The incident follows a similar collapse at Lady Curzon and Bowring Hospital on April 29 that killed seven people.
Bengaluru city corporations have formed special teams to audit and remove dilapidated structures across the city.
