James Harden declined his player option to create space for potential additions, including a possible return by LeBron James. Mitchell's signing removes any uncertainty around his own future that could have affected those plans.
Cleveland has kept its core together after trading Darius Garland for Harden earlier this year. The team will enter the 2026-27 season with Mitchell, Evan Mobley and Jarrett Allen all locked in long term.
