Egypt inspects progress on Ataba Market redevelopment phase two

Egypt’s Minister of Local Development and Environment inspected ongoing work on the second phase of Ataba Market redevelopment in Cairo, following the project’s launch in March.

Manal Awad visited the site on Sunday as part of ongoing efforts to modernise commercial districts across the capital. The current phase covers several streets in the Ataba and Mouski districts, including Youssef Naguib Extension, El-Qatawi, Bab Sharq, El-Bosta and Ataba streets, spanning about 1,052 metres.

The works aim to ease chronic overcrowding and remove informal street occupations that have blocked emergency vehicles. Plans include upgrading 152 shops, restoring five historic buildings and improving nine others, while adding standardised facades, fire-resistant canopies, vendor spaces, cameras and better lighting.

Infrastructure upgrades are advancing, with drinking water works completed and sewage networks nearly 95 percent finished. Authorities took over the site in late March after moving vendors temporarily to Ataba Garden. Awad met shop owners and vendors during the tour and urged adherence to timelines while calling for more greening efforts.
