Egypt and Algeria agree to deepen strategic ties and coordinate on Gaza ceasefire

Egyptian President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi met with Algeria's Prime Minister Seifi Ghrib on Tuesday, reaffirming the strategic nature of bilateral relations and a shared commitment to expand cooperation across various fields. Discussions focused on enhancing political coordination on regional issues, particularly the situation in Gaza. Al-Sisi praised Algeria's positive role during its recent UN Security Council term.

President Al-Sisi opened the meeting by highlighting the deep historical bonds between Egypt and Algeria, noting the increasing momentum in bilateral relations in recent years. He extended greetings to Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune and wished Algeria ongoing progress and prosperity. Ghrib, in turn, conveyed Tebboune's greetings to Al-Sisi and affirmed Algeria's commitment to building on the agreements from Tebboune's visit to Cairo in October 2024. He also congratulated Egypt on the opening of the Grand Egyptian Museum and the election of former antiquities minister Khaled El-Enany as UNESCO Director-General.

The talks reflected a mutual interest in expanding cooperation in agriculture, industry, education, energy, telecommunications, and information technology, alongside stronger political coordination on bilateral and regional matters. Al-Sisi welcomed the holding of the 9th session of the Egyptian-Algerian Joint Higher Committee in Cairo, emphasizing the need to leverage its outcomes to advance economic, trade, and investment relations. They also discussed opportunities to deepen ties in development, infrastructure, and new urban communities, as well as boosting mutual investments and encouraging Egyptian firms to expand in Algeria.

Regional developments, especially in Gaza, were a key focus. Al-Sisi reiterated Egypt's continuous efforts with all parties to implement the UN Security Council-endorsed ceasefire, ensure compliance, prevent violations, and increase humanitarian aid flows. He mentioned Egypt's plans to host an international conference on Gaza's early recovery and reconstruction, underscoring the urgent need to stop abuses against Palestinians in the West Bank. Al-Sisi commended Algeria's 'positive and principled role' on the UN Security Council, particularly in defending Arab causes, with the Palestinian issue at the forefront.

The leaders exchanged views on broader regional crises, stressing the importance of preventing escalation to avoid severe consequences, upholding state sovereignty and territorial integrity, protecting civilians, and ending all forms of violations.
