Eugene Wamalwa reveals plans to ally with Wetang’ula and Mudavadi ahead of 2027 elections

Democratic Action Party (Kenya) leader Eugene Wamalwa has revealed plans to ally with National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula and Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi, along with other leaders from Kenya's Western region, to strengthen political unity.

At a public event in Trans Nzoia on Saturday, January 24, 2026, Eugene Wamalwa stated that collaboration between the Democratic Action Party (DAP) and FORD Kenya would be crucial to keep political parties vibrant in Kenya's Western region, especially ahead of the 2027 general elections. He emphasized that the goal is to prioritize the region's interests, not to support President William Ruto.

"In this region, we have four parties, and when we look at the situation closely, some parties are being dissolved. We were given a challenge by the two remaining parties, DAP and FORD Kenya," Wamalwa said.

Speaker Moses Wetang’ula, speaking at the same event, disclosed that he is forming a political pact with Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi and Co-operatives and MSMEs Cabinet Secretary Wycliff Oparanya to bolster support for President Ruto before the 2027 elections. He said the alliance is designed to position the Western region to take power in 2032, and it would be seamless if Wamalwa joined them.

“I urge Wamalwa, with whom we have agreed to work together, to join his elder brothers in cementing Luhya unity behind President Ruto so that the community can realise its long-held dream of producing a President,” Wetang’ula said.

Wamalwa, a vocal critic of the Kenya Kwanza government, is part of the opposition led by former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua and Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka. The move could stir political ripples, as it suggests Wamalwa might align with figures central to Ruto's administration. A month earlier, Oparanya had declared his readiness to leave the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) to unite the Western region.

"I want to say in front of you. If the problem is having different parties, I am ready to leave ODM even now. Let us come together because I know that we are a sleeping giant in this country," Oparanya stated.
