National Conference president Farooq Abdullah has called on the central government to introduce and pass a bill restoring statehood to Jammu and Kashmir during the ongoing monsoon session of Parliament.
Speaking on July 24, 2026, Mr. Abdullah said the Centre should honour its repeated commitments on statehood. He described the restoration as a constitutional and democratic imperative rather than just a political demand.
Mr. Abdullah, who has served as Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir three times, urged Parliament to seize the opportunity to fulfil government assurances. He said people of the region have waited long enough for their democratic rights and dignity to be restored.
His appeal follows a protest he led at Jantar Mantar in Delhi, joined by Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and other legislators. Mr. Abdullah also praised the Omar Abdullah-led government for its response to recent weather challenges in the Union Territory.
