Fedora Linux 43 released with major updates

The Fedora Project has released Fedora Linux 43 on October 28, 2025, featuring the Linux 6.17 kernel and a Wayland-only GNOME 49 desktop. This version introduces the Anaconda WebUI installer as default across editions and upgrades to RPM 6.0 for enhanced security. It supports x86_64 and AArch64 architectures, with upgrades available for existing users.

Fedora Linux 43 arrived on October 28, 2025, as the latest stable release from the Red Hat-sponsored project. It ships with the Linux 6.17 kernel series, providing updates for modern hardware including better power management and support for emerging architectures.

The Fedora Workstation edition now uses GNOME 49 exclusively with Wayland, removing X11 session support while retaining XWayland for legacy application compatibility. This shift aims to improve graphics rendering, security, and latency, particularly for multi-monitor and high-resolution setups. The KDE Plasma Desktop edition features Plasma 6.4.5, with enhancements like per-workspace tiling and accessibility improvements.

A key change is the default adoption of the Anaconda WebUI installer across Workstation, KDE, and Spins, offering a more intuitive, linear interface based on HTML, JavaScript, and Python. It supports reinstallation while preserving home directory data and simplifies partitioning with btrfs volumes using Zstandard compression.

System infrastructure sees RPM 6.0, enabling multiple signatures per package and better OpenPGP key management for improved security. The boot partition is expanded to 2 GiB to accommodate larger kernels and firmware, and initrd compression switches to Zstandard for faster boot times. For UEFI installations on x86_64 systems, GPT partition tables are now enforced, dropping MBR support to avoid compatibility issues.

Developer tools are refreshed, including GCC 15.2, GNU Binutils 2.45, glibc 2.42, Python 3.14, Go 1.25, LLVM 21, and support for the Hare programming language. Fonts gain COLRv1 format in Noto Color Emoji for better rendering, and Fedora Kinoite enables automatic updates by default.

Users can download ISOs from the official site for x86_64 and AArch64. Existing Fedora 42 installations upgrade via GNOME Software or DNF instructions. The release followed community testing to resolve blocker bugs, ensuring stability despite delays.
