Florida man sentenced to 45 years for killing mother in burglary

John Aylor received a 45-year prison sentence for stabbing his mother to death during a burglary at her Florida home. The 39-year-old pleaded guilty to reduced charges, sparing his daughter and another child from testifying in a trial. Hillsborough County officials highlighted the plea deal's role in protecting the family from further trauma.

Hillsborough County Circuit Judge G. Gregory Green sentenced 39-year-old John 'Jake' Jacob Aylor to 45 years in a state correctional facility on Monday. Aylor had pleaded guilty to one count each of second-degree murder with a weapon and armed burglary with battery in the August 12, 2024, killing of his 64-year-old mother, Julie Aylor. He originally faced first-degree murder charges that could have meant life in prison. The incident occurred at Julie Aylor's home in Brandon, where she lived with two grandchildren, including Aylor's 10-year-old daughter. Aylor entered through a dog door around 4:30 a.m., yelling angrily after finding nothing worth stealing, investigators said. Julie Aylor was stabbed at least 10 times, suffering fatal wounds to her neck and torso. She crawled toward a grandchild's room, pleading 'Jake, help me,' before one child called 911 around 4:50 a.m. Deputies found her dead, with evidence including a blood-covered kitchen knife bearing Aylor's palm print, his bicycle outside, and his fingerprint on her blood-smeared cellphone recovered nearby. Hillsborough State Attorney Suzy Lopez said the plea deal protected minor witnesses, including family members. 'Our focus was on protecting the victim's family and minimizing further harm,' Lopez stated. 'Two of the key witnesses are minor family members, and moving forward with a trial would have required them to relive deeply traumatic events.' She noted the sentence ensures accountability, given Aylor's age. Hillsborough County Sheriff Chad Chronister described Aylor's rage when no valuables were found, adding that Julie had been the primary caregiver for his daughter since birth. Aylor, who had a history of drug addiction and burglaries at the home, was arrested the next day.
