The Gauteng Department of Education will open its online system for 2027 Grade 1 and Grade 8 placements on 5 August. Applications must be completed through a five-step process by 4 September. Officials and critics have highlighted both preparations and past challenges with the platform.
The Gauteng Department of Education confirmed that the application window opens at 8am on 5 August 2026 and closes at midnight on 4 September 2026. Parents and guardians must register new login details and complete all steps, including selecting three to five schools and submitting documents within seven school days. MEC Lebogang Maile advised early preparation with required paperwork such as proof of residence and identity documents.
Maile noted that the province serves more than 2.4 million learners across about 2,100 public schools, with enrolment rising by 2,300 learners from 2025 to 2026. He warned against fraud or paying for placements, stating that no public school place is for sale. Forty-eight walk-in centres are available to assist applicants.
Sergio Isa dos Santos, the DA Gauteng spokesperson on education, raised concerns about the late start compared with other provinces and recurring technical issues from prior years. The online system, introduced in 2015, placed about 400,000 learners in 2025 but has faced glitches such as crashes and upload failures in the past.
