Hong Kong urges Covid vaccinations ahead of next wave

Hong Kong health authorities are urging the public to get the latest Covid vaccine in a timely manner, as more than five months have passed since the last surge and the next wave is approaching. The Centre for Health Protection notes that Covid-19 active periods occur in cycles every six to nine months, linked to changes in predominant strains and declining herd immunity.

Hong Kong's Centre for Health Protection stated on Friday that Covid-19 active periods typically occur in cycles every six to nine months. With more than five months passed since the last upsurge, the centre is urging the public to get vaccinated promptly to reduce the risk of severe illness and death.

Controller Dr Edwin Tsui Lok-kin said: “According to the centre’s analysis, the active periods are associated with the changes in the predominant circulating strains and a decline in herd immunity in Hong Kong.”

Since late March, the local predominant strains have shifted from KP.2 and KP.3 to NB.1.8.1. The latest surveillance data shows that NB.1.8.1 and LP.8.1 are currently co-circulating in the community.

Guidance from the World Health Organization supports timely vaccinations to address emerging variants. Authorities in Hong Kong stress that vaccination remains a key measure to prevent severe cases, particularly as immunity wanes over time.

This call aims to keep the public vigilant, even as the overall pandemic has stabilized, highlighting the need to monitor periodic fluctuations.

Hong Kong health authorities are urging residents to get the latest seasonal influenza vaccine as the city braces for a potential winter flu wave, with temperatures dropping to the season's lowest. The Centre for Health Protection's appeal coincides with concerns from an infectious disease specialist about low vaccination rates in the community. Recent data indicates the summer flu season is winding down.

Following initial detections in neighboring South American countries, the H3N2 influenza A K subclade has now reached Argentina, with confirmed cases in Buenos Aires, Santa Cruz, and Neuquén, including hospitalizations for pneumonia. Authorities are advancing the 2026 flu vaccination campaign for at-risk groups, while current vaccines offer partial protection against severe illness, bolstered by antivirals like oseltamivir.
