HUK Coburg reports overcoming electric car slump

Two years after the end of the electric car purchase premium, the share of private buyers opting for electric vehicles is rising again. According to HUK Coburg, 6.2 percent of car buyers chose battery-powered models in the third quarter. The rate has doubled since the low point in early 2024.

HUK Coburg, the market leader in car insurance with around 14 million insured vehicles, analyzed its data and found that the switch to electric cars among private individuals is increasing. Unlike the Federal Motor Transport Authority's registration figures, the calculation focuses solely on the private sector and includes used electric cars. This year, half of those switching have already chosen a used electric vehicle.

HUK board member Jörg Rheinländer commented: «A new boost in the spread of electric cars in Germany seems to be here now». The insurer anticipates further growth if the federal government introduces new funding that also covers used cars.

Regional differences are stark: In Lower Saxony and Bavaria, the switch rates in the third quarter exceeded seven percent. In the eastern German states of Saxony-Anhalt, Saxony, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, and Thuringia, they remained below four percent. This skepticism in the east contrasts with the overall trend toward greater acceptance of electric mobility.
