The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission has fined Kipipiri MP Wanjiku Muhia Ksh1.5 million for inflammatory remarks made at a rally in Nyandarua County. The commission also summoned Nakuru Town East MP David Gikaria over code of conduct breaches during Ol Kalou by-election campaigns.
The IEBC's Electoral Code of Conduct Enforcement Committee ruled that Muhia violated paragraph 6A of the code. It ordered her to pay the fine within 72 hours, issue a public apology and refrain from similar statements. Commissioner Alutalala Mukhwana said the decision followed submissions, applicable law and evidence presented.
Muhia had urged residents at the rally to form groups of ten to monitor outsiders. The remarks drew backlash and led to her being summoned last week.
Mukhwana announced that the committee summoned Gikaria on Monday to respond to allegations. Gikaria had admitted distributing Ksh1.2 million to crowds at a rally in Ol Kalou. Failure to comply with orders could result in sanctions under the Elections Act, including a bar from future elections.
