Minister of State for External Affairs Pabitra Margherita and Bihar Governor Syed Ata Hasnain are expected to represent India at the funeral of former Iranian Supreme Leader Seyyed Ali Khamenei on July 4.
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian invited Prime Minister Narendra Modi to the six-day funeral programme spanning three cities. An official announcement on the level of Indian participation is yet to be made, though it was considered unlikely that the prime minister would attend.
The programme begins with a farewell event in Tehran during July 4-5, followed by the main funeral procession in the capital on July 6. Ceremonies are scheduled in Qom on July 7, with burial in Mashhad on July 9.
Khamenei was killed on February 28 in an airstrike during the West Asian conflict. Leaders from China, Russia, Pakistan and Qatar have also been invited, with Pakistan confirming it will send an official delegation.
