Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi and Solomon Islands Prime Minister Matthew Wale met in Tokyo on Thursday to strengthen bilateral relations following Wale's rise to power.
The leaders held their first meeting since Wale took office in May. They affirmed traditional ties and discussed regional affairs amid concerns over China's influence.
Takaichi highlighted shared values including freedom, democracy, the rule of law and human rights. She expressed hope for continued cooperation to make both countries stronger and more prosperous.
Wale thanked Japan for its support and committed to further strengthening relations. Takaichi conveyed plans to provide a development assistance loan of up to 3 billion yen, signed earlier in July.
Wale's first diplomatic visits have included Australia, New Zealand, the United States and Japan. In June he indicated his government would review a 2022 security pact with China.
