The race for Johannesburg mayor is intensifying ahead of the 2026 local government elections. Analysts point to service delivery failures and political instability as key factors. Several politicians have already unveiled their candidates.
Political analyst Ntsikelelo Breakfast described Johannesburg as a key battleground due to ongoing water shortages, power interruptions and poor governance. He noted that no party is likely to win an outright majority, meaning coalitions will play a central role in determining the city's leadership.
Breakfast emphasised the need for effective local government. “It’s important to have good leadership, especially at the local government level, because the role of the municipality is not only to fetch the garbage, but it is to grow the economy, it is to absorb the unemployed, and it is to promote development,” he said.
The analyst criticised the current situation, citing large-scale corruption, slow service delivery and unreliable supplies of power and water. These issues, he added, pose security threats and strain relations between citizens and leaders.
