Jon Hamm shares thoughts on final Landman scenes

Jon Hamm has opened up about filming the death of his character, Monty Miller, in the season 1 finale of Taylor Sheridan's Landman. The Mad Men alum expressed mixed feelings about the emotional storyline and its impact on the series moving forward. With season 2 set to premiere on Paramount+ on November 16, Hamm anticipates stronger roles for his co-stars.

Background on Landman

Landman, created by Taylor Sheridan and Christian Wallace, follows the high-stakes world of the oil industry. Jon Hamm stars as Monty Miller, the tycoon behind the M-Tex oil company, alongside Billy Bob Thornton as Tommy Norris and Demi Moore as Cami Miller. The series premiered on Paramount+ earlier in 2025, drawing Hamm to the project for the chance to collaborate with Sheridan and Thornton.

Hamm's Experience with Monty's Death

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Hamm discussed the challenges of portraying Monty's heart issues and eventual death in the season 1 finale. He admitted the physical demands were tough, involving medical tubes and prosthetics. "Obviously, the particulars of the job in that case are a little difficult, given that you've got tubes and a bunch of gunk all up in you, but the rest of it is fun," Hamm said. "Who gets to be present at their own death, you know?"

Hamm also shared his sadness in parting with the cast after wrapping his scenes. Despite the difficulties, he appreciated the opportunity to explore the character's arc.

Implications for Season 2

Monty's absence shifts dynamics at M-Tex, with Cami and Tommy taking over operations. Hamm believes this opens doors for deeper storylines, particularly for Moore's character. "I think she probably has a lot of thoughts going through her head right now, and a lot of them have to do with how this life really hurt her family," he suggested. "You'll get a grudge from things like that, for sure; you'll hold a real grudge. I think that's probably going to be what happens for her, but I'm not the guy who writes this."

Season 2 premieres November 16 on Paramount+, promising continued drama in the oil sector without Hamm's Monty.
