Kerala to bid farewell with state honours to 10-month-old Alin, state’s youngest organ donor

Alin Sherin Abraham, a 10-month-old infant from Kerala, was declared brain dead following a road accident and became the state's youngest organ donor. Her parents decided to donate her organs, which were successfully transplanted into other children. Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has ordered state honours for her funeral.

On February 5, Alin Sherin Abraham suffered serious injuries in a road accident while travelling with her family in Kottayam. The infant, daughter of Arun Abraham and Sherin Ann John from Mallappally in Pathanamthitta district, was declared brain dead on Friday. In a decision to honor her memory, her parents chose to donate her heart valve, liver, two kidneys, and cornea.

Organs were harvested by doctors at a private hospital in Kochi and transported by road to Thiruvananthapuram that Friday night. The liver went to a six-month-old child, while both kidneys were transplanted into a 10-year-old. The heart valve was delivered to Sri Chitra Institute of Medical Sciences in Thiruvananthapuram, and the cornea was preserved at the eye bank of Amrita Hospital in Kochi.

Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan praised the parents' choice, calling it “noble and inspiring.” In a Facebook post, he stated: “Alin’s parents have created a paradigm for society in the field of organ donation in Kerala. People of Kerala join her family in their grief. Heartfelt condolences and tribute to Alin. She will be given an official farewell with honors by our state.”

Following Vijayan's instructions, the General Administration Department directed the Pathanamthitta district collector to place a wreath on behalf of the Chief Minister and state government. Police honours will be provided by the district police chief during the funeral at St Thomas CSI Church in Nedungadappally on Sunday.
