Former SPD chairman Kurt Beck has expressed concern about the future of democracy in Germany. He sees many parallels to the Weimar Republic.
Beck told newspapers of the Funke Mediengruppe that he sees many parallels to the Weimar Republic these days. Many current developments reminded him of this phase of the downfall of a democracy.
Looking at the state elections in Saxony-Anhalt, Berlin and Mecklenburg-Vorpommern in September, he said he felt very uneasy. None of the democratic parties has yet found a recipe against the rise of the AfD.
Beck advised his party to address concerns about democracy. He spoke of the danger that democracy is being hollowed out from the far left and far right, with the danger from the right being infinitely greater.
