Lugi HF has qualified for Handbollsligan this autumn after a 35-28 (17-12) victory over Västerås-Irsta in the decisive fourth qualifying match. Coach Ola Månsson shed tears post-match, cheered by fans chanting his name.
Lugi held a clear lead for most of the match at Young Arena in Lund, but coach Ola Månsson remained anxious until the end. "Nervös är fel ord idag, jag var orolig. Det är lätt att man blir försiktig i det här läget," he said after the win that secured promotion.
After the final whistle, players celebrated with the crowd before 53-year-old Månsson received ovations. Fans chanted about him as "Superman" who only wins. "Jag vet inte riktigt vad de sjöng, men jag hörde mitt namn, Superman och att jag kan vinna," he commented.
Månsson praised the club's trust in young local players over buying experience. "Det är Alexander [Kjaersgaard] från Lödde, jag är från Kävlinge, Albin [Sjögren] är från Eslöv, Anton Bengtsson är från Staffanstorp. Vi är regionens lag," he said. Goalkeeper Viggo Håkansson enjoyed the atmosphere: "Vilken jäkla inramning. Sista minuten hade jag gåshud."
Månsson plans to celebrate with the team, but sparingly with alcohol to preserve the joy. "Det finns så mycket lycka i kroppen och det vill jag inte dämpa," he told Sydsvenskan.
