MAK demands audit of fuel pricing formula after EPRA review

The Motorists Association of Kenya has called for a full audit of the fuel pricing formula following the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority's announcement of new pump prices.

The Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority announced on June 14 that maximum retail prices for the period from June 15 to July 14 would see Super Petrol decrease by Ksh0.22 per litre to Ksh214.03 in Nairobi. Diesel would drop by Ksh10 per litre to Ksh222.86 while kerosene stays at Ksh191.38 per litre.

The Motorists Association of Kenya issued a statement hours later expressing disappointment with the adjustments. It said the petrol reduction was a token amount and accused the regulator of using opaque political negotiations for the diesel cut instead of the official formula.

MAK called for Parliament to scrutinise EPRA's independence and demanded disclosure of all calculations used in the review. It also urged the return of the previous Energy Regulatory Authority body.

The Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) has announced new fuel prices for the April-May 2026 cycle, with super petrol rising by Ksh28.69 per litre to Ksh206.97 in Nairobi. Diesel increased by Ksh40.30 to Ksh206.84 per litre, while kerosene remains unchanged at Ksh152.78. The hikes stem from sharp rises in landed costs combined with taxes and margins.

Petrol stations in Nairobi and surrounding areas are selling fuel below the EPRA maximum of KSh214 per litre for the May-June cycle, with some offering prices as low as KSh211. This is possible because EPRA sets only a ceiling price rather than a fixed rate.

Energy and Petroleum Cabinet Secretary Opiyo Wandayi has ordered the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) to exclude a 60,000-metric-tonne consignment of super petrol from monthly cost computations, as it was imported outside the government-to-government (G-to-G) framework. He directed a freeze on all related payments and instructed One Petroleum Ltd to withdraw its invoices. The move aims to protect the fuel supply chain and prevent price hikes.

Kiharu MP Ndindi Nyoro has written to Speaker Moses Wetang'ula requesting an emergency sitting of the National Assembly to consider proposals that could cut fuel prices by up to Ksh27 per litre ahead of a planned motorists' strike.
