A 20-year-old man has been arrested in Madrid after barricading himself in a home with his younger brother and attacking a police officer with a knife. The officer emerged unharmed thanks to his helmet, during an operation in Puente de Vallecas. The attacker is suffering a psychotic episode and has been admitted to psychiatry.
In the early hours of Friday, October 10, 2025, Spain's National Police received a call via 091 about a 20-year-old man acting aggressively in a ground-floor apartment in Madrid's Puente de Vallecas district. The man was holding his 17-year-old brother hostage, threatening him with a large knife.
Officers activated the critical incident protocol, deploying negotiators and the Prevention and Reaction Unit (UPR), experts in rapid interventions. They first rescued the minor through a window to ensure his safety. Then, they entered the home to apprehend the suspect.
During the arrest, the young man lunged at one officer, attempting to stab him in vital areas. The knife blade lodged in the agent's helmet, sparing him injury even as the attacker continued thrusting toward his neck. Sources from the operation confirmed the policeman is in good condition.
A video released by police shows a group of officers storming the room, where furniture like a bookshelf lies overturned. The suspect, charged with attempted homicide and serious threats, was taken to Gregorio Marañón Hospital. There, Samur medics diagnosed a schizophrenic psychotic episode, leading to his admission in the psychiatry unit.
The Unión Federal de Policía (UFP) union responded on social media: “Denying us high-risk profession status denies justice and equality for State Security Forces and Corps.” They added: “We are reaching the limit.”
