Manchester United have confirmed that midfielder Manuel Ugarte suffered a knee ligament injury while playing for Uruguay at the World Cup.
The 25-year-old was stretchered off during Friday’s group-stage match against Spain in Guadalajara after twisting awkwardly in a tackle.
United said in a statement that assessment of the injury is ongoing to determine treatment and rehabilitation timescale. Reports in Uruguay have suggested a possible cruciate ligament injury, though the club is awaiting its own tests.
Ugarte had already faced uncertainty over his future at Old Trafford after limited appearances since his £50.8 million move from Paris Saint-Germain in 2024. His last outing came in a Premier League defeat to Leeds on 13 April.
