Maple Leafs' Chris Tanev discharged from hospital after stretcher incident

Toronto Maple Leafs defenceman Chris Tanev was discharged from a Philadelphia hospital on Sunday morning following an injury that saw him stretchered off the ice during Saturday's game against the Philadelphia Flyers. The team won 5-2, but Tanev was placed on injured reserve retroactive to November 1. No timetable for his return has been provided.

Chris Tanev was hit from behind by Philadelphia Flyers forward Matvei Michkov during the first period of Saturday's matchup in Philadelphia. Tanev's head snapped back as he fell to the ice, where he lay still holding his head until medical staff and trainers loaded him onto a stretcher and removed him from the game.

Upon video review, Michkov received a two-minute penalty for interference. This incident occurred shortly after Tanev had returned to play following an 11-day absence due to a concussion.

Maple Leafs coach Craig Berube provided an update after the 5-2 victory, stating, “He’s moving, and I think he'll be all right. But he’s getting some tests done right now. We’ll know more in a little while.” Berube added, “We’ll know soon. He might be coming home with us.”

Tanev remained in the hospital overnight for evaluation but was released Sunday and is returning to Toronto. In a related roster move, the Maple Leafs placed Tanev on injured reserve retroactive to November 1 and recalled defenceman Dakota Mermis from the Toronto Marlies of the American Hockey League.

The team has not announced a return timeline for Tanev.
