Mavericks show no interest in trading Kyrie Irving amid Davis rumors

The Dallas Mavericks are not considering trading Kyrie Irving ahead of the NBA trade deadline, according to reports. However, discussions about moving Anthony Davis are gaining traction. ESPN's Tim MacMahon highlighted Irving's untouchable status while noting Davis as a potential trade candidate.

With a revamped front office, the Dallas Mavericks are expected to be active at the NBA trade deadline in February. Reports indicate that point guard Kyrie Irving remains firmly off the trading block. ESPN reporter Tim MacMahon, on his Howdy Partners podcast, reiterated that the Mavericks have no intention of parting with Irving, who is recovering from ACL surgery and could return later this season.

"What I would tell you about Kyrie is the Mavericks do not want to trade him," MacMahon said. Irving's contract adds to his value: he earns $35.6 million this season, with a guaranteed $39.5 million next year and a $42.4 million player option for 2027-28. Only an extraordinary offer would prompt Dallas to reconsider.

In contrast, center Anthony Davis presents a different scenario. MacMahon described trading Davis as "a real possibility—and I would even say likelihood—this season." Davis, aged 32 and turning 33 in March, is returning to action against the Lakers after missing 14 games due to a calf strain. His salary is $54.1 million this year, escalating to a guaranteed $58.5 million next season, and he plans to seek an extension this summer.

Potential suitors for Davis include the Chicago Bulls, Golden State Warriors, New York Knicks, and Phoenix Suns, though the latter two seem improbable. Trading him is complicated by his injury history, high salary, and Dallas's position against the second-apron hard cap. For instance, a deal with Golden State might require Jimmy Butler straight up or a package involving Draymond Green and Jonathan Kuminga, but such trades face significant hurdles in making financial and roster sense for both teams.

Irving rumors are unlikely to materialize this season, while Davis speculation persists.
