Megadeth has unveiled a new music video for 'Let There Be Shred,' the latest single from their upcoming self-titled final studio album, set for release on January 23, 2026. The video features frontman Dave Mustaine performing martial arts stunts as a tribute to his martial arts instructors. Mustaine announced the album as the band's last in August 2025, citing a desire to end on their own terms after a storied career.
Megadeth, one of the pioneering acts in the thrash metal genre, released the promotional video for 'Let There Be Shred' in December 2025. The track celebrates the band's early days, emphasizing the fast and furious sound that defined thrash metal. As Mustaine stated, 'When Megadeth started, we said we would be fast and furious – we said so on the flyers we handed out. This song is fast and furious… It has a very hooky chorus that draws you in, and you can’t help but play air guitar and headbang.'
The video, directed by Keith Leman, incorporates scenes of mixed martial arts combat, with Mustaine showcasing his skills. He recently earned a black belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, adding to his existing black belts in other disciplines. Mustaine described the shoot as 'a blast to make and it's a tribute to my first sensei, Benny ‘The Jet’ Urquidez, and my professor, Reggie Almieda. Everyone on the set was really stoked to see each of us do our stunts. In the end, we got the balance of shredding and ass-kicking just right!'
This release marks the second single from Megadeth's forthcoming self-titled album, following 'I Don’t Care.' The band, formed in 1983, has influenced the metal scene profoundly, with Mustaine's history including early contributions to Metallica. In August 2025, the 64-year-old Mustaine announced the album would be their last, reflecting on his career: 'There’s so many musicians that have come to the end of their career, whether accidental or intentional. Most of them don’t get to go out on their own terms on top, and that’s where I’m at in my life right now.' He expressed gratitude to fans and anticipation for a global farewell tour.
The current lineup includes Mustaine on guitar and vocals, Dirk Verbeuren on drums, James LoMenzo on bass, and Teemu Mäntysaari on guitar. Megadeth's decision to retire follows Slayer's 2019 farewell, though Slayer has since made festival appearances.
