The recently unveiled portrait of Angela Merkel attracts around 900 visitors daily to Berlin's Bode Museum. Visitor numbers are thus 85 percent above the June average.
A Museumsinsel spokesperson confirmed the increased numbers. The painting by Jérémie Queyras shows Merkel standing in a bright blue blazer against a gold-brown background.
Merkel explained at the unveiling at the end of June that she had needed distance and wanted to enjoy the process. The 28-year-old artist from Freiburg had applied in writing in 2022.
The work remains on view at the Bode Museum until October 4. It will then go on loan to the Chancellor's Office.
