Chancellor Friedrich Merz and Labor Minister Bärbel Bas announced Tuesday morning that all 33 recommendations of the pension commission will be fully implemented. The package is to be turned into law quickly.
Merz said at the handover in the Chancellery: “We in the coalition agree that we will fully implement this package.” He stressed that it was not possible to remove individual measures. Bas described the package as a “Gesamtkunstwerk” in which everything interlocks.
At the Tag der Deutschen Industrie, Merz received warm applause from business representatives for the announcement. This contrasted with earlier appearances where reactions had been more restrained.
However, initial discordant notes emerged from SPD circles. Bas personally expressed support but spoke of the need to discuss the package. The reform aims to raise the pension level and lower contributions.
