Lionel Messi netted his 20th World Cup goal to put Argentina ahead against Cape Verde in the round of 32 at the 2026 tournament.
The match kicked off at 23:00 BST on Friday in Miami. Messi converted in the 29th minute after controlling a long pass from Lisandro Martinez and finishing over the goalkeeper.
Argentina made nine changes to the side that beat Jordan, retaining only Emiliano Martinez and Lautaro Martinez. Cape Verde also altered its lineup following a 0-0 draw with Saudi Arabia.
The winners advance to face Egypt in the last 16 in Atlanta on Tuesday. Messi now leads the scoring charts outright with seven goals at the 2026 finals.
