Ecuador advanced as one of the best third-placed teams after earning four points in Group E. The South Americans lost 0-1 to Ivory Coast, drew 0-0 with Curacao and beat Germany 2-1.
The only prior meeting between the two sides in a World Cup took place at Korea-Japan 2002, when Mexico won 2-1 in the group stage under Javier Aguirre.
