Naomi Osaka retired from the Bad Homburg final on Saturday due to a foot injury, dealing a setback to her Wimbledon preparations.
Osaka was trailing Karolina Muchova 6-1, 1-0 at the start of the second set when she withdrew from her first grass-court final. She had taken a medical timeout during the opening set.
The 28-year-old four-time Grand Slam champion told the crowd: “I just want to say thank you to everyone who came to watch the match. I apologise for not being able to finish, but this atmosphere was incredible the whole week.”
Osaka has never advanced beyond the third round at Wimbledon, which begins on Monday. She is scheduled to face Elsa Jacquemot in the first round.
