Donald P. Bellisario departed the CBS procedural NCIS after its fourth season in 2007. The decision stemmed from creative tensions with star Mark Harmon, according to accounts from the show's production team.

Bellisario and Don McGill created NCIS, which premiered in 2003. The series has since produced more than 500 episodes over 23 seasons, centering on military investigations led by Special Agent Leroy Jethro Gibbs, played by Harmon for the first 19 seasons.
