New York Islanders recall defenseman Travis Mitchell from Bridgeport

The New York Islanders recalled defenseman Travis Mitchell from the Bridgeport Islanders on Thursday morning ahead of their game against the Vegas Golden Knights. The move allows Scott Mayfield to return to New York for the birth of his first child. Mitchell will not play in the upcoming game.

The New York Islanders made a roster adjustment on Thursday by recalling 25-year-old defenseman Travis Mitchell from their AHL affiliate, the Bridgeport Islanders. This recall comes as veteran defenseman Scott Mayfield heads back to New York for the birth of his first child.

Mitchell, standing at 6-foot-4 and weighing 203 pounds, has recorded three assists in 12 games with Bridgeport this season. Last year, he tallied 13 points, including four goals and nine assists, over 65 games, while accumulating 101 penalty minutes. Now in his fourth professional season with Bridgeport, Mitchell previously played four years at Cornell University.

Although Mitchell joined the Islanders, he did not participate in Thursday's skate and will sit out the game against the Vegas Golden Knights. Islanders coach Patrick Roy received a positive scouting report from Bridgeport head coach Rocky Thompson.

"Rocky said that [Mitchell] is their best defenseman right now," Roy said. "He deserves to be here, we're happy for him."

This recall provides depth to the Islanders' blue line during Mayfield's absence.
