The National Transport and Safety Authority has revoked the operating licence of Nicco Movers 1 Sacco and ordered all its vehicles off the roads with immediate effect.
NTSA Director General Nashon Kondiwa issued the directive on Friday, June 12, citing safety failures and loss of control over the fleet. The decision follows the death of 19-year-old Eugene Mutuku, a Kenya Medical Training College student, on June 4 after he was allegedly thrown from a moving Nicco matatu during a fare dispute and then run over.
Two operations managers have been arrested and charged with being accessories to a felony, concealing evidence and aiding the escape of the crew. The authority stated that some of the Sacco’s 90 buses were unsafe and that management had failed to address major safety concerns.
Law enforcement officers have been instructed to impound any Nicco vehicles found still operating. The Sacco runs minibuses along the Thika Superhighway serving routes between Nairobi CBD and Githurai, Kimbo, Juja and Thika Town.
