Nyeri hospital set to receive Ksh400 million in SHA claims

Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale has revealed that Consolata Hospital Mathari in Nyeri will receive a total of Ksh400 million from the Social Health Authority (SHA) by the end of this month. This includes Ksh29.3 million in verified claims in the next payment cycle. The facility has already received Ksh372 million since SHA's inception.

Speaking before Members of Parliament at the National Assembly on Wednesday, November 5, 2025, CS Duale disclosed the details in response to a question from Mukuruweini MP John Philip Kaguchia regarding an alleged Ksh450 million debt owed to the hospital in unpaid claims.

Consolata Hospital Mathari, located on Ihururu Road in Nyeri County, is a Level 5 faith-based facility serving residents of Kiganjo/Mathari Ward and the broader county, which had a population of over 759,000 according to the 2019 census. It provides 24-hour emergency services, comprehensive outpatient and inpatient care, and three operating theatres for surgeries. The maternity and child health department offers full antenatal and child welfare services. The hospital features advanced imaging at the Our Lady of Perpetual Help Diagnostic Centre, a modern laboratory, an eight-bed dialysis centre, a cancer care wing for chemotherapy, and a comprehensive care centre for HIV/AIDS patients. Additional services include ENT, eye, and dental care, physiotherapy, vaccination, and counselling.

The facility has lamented prolonged delays in settling claims from the defunct National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF) and SHA. Along with other faith-based hospitals, it raised alarms over alleged fraudulent payouts to other hospitals while legitimate ones like theirs were overlooked, despite continuing to provide services. Duale cited reasons for delays including high-value complex claims for services such as oncology, surgery, and dialysis, which require extensive review in the government's adjudication process. He also mentioned provider submission issues, such as missing signatures, incorrect patient details, and low resubmission rates for corrections, as well as claims management challenges within SHA due to court cases and litigation. The CS assured that such issues would end once SHA resolves the litigation.

In February, the Archbishop of the Catholic Archdiocese of Nyeri urged the government to disburse owed funds to faith-based hospitals, noting that Catholic facilities nationwide were collectively owed approximately Ksh2.5 billion, severely impacting their ability to provide quality healthcare.
