The off-cycle governorship election in Osun State scheduled for August 15 is set to be a contest between incumbent Governor Nurudeen Jackson Adeleke and former finance commissioner Asiwaju Bola Munirudeen Oyebamiji, known as AMBO.
The election is described as a straight fight between the two main candidates. Adeleke is the current governor while Oyebamiji previously served as finance commissioner under former governor Gboyega Oyetola.
Najeem Salam of the ADC is also contesting with support from former governor Rauf Aregbesola. An incident occurred at an INEC PVC distribution centre in Okuku, Odo-Otin LGA, where armed men took packs of PVCs this past Sunday.
July 28 was declared a work-free day in Osun State to allow residents to collect their PVCs. Towns including Ile-Ife, Ikire and Ikoyi have seen past violent incidents linked to political tensions.
