Nicolas Otamendi has retired from international football with Argentina at the age of 38 following a 17-year career. The defender made his final appearance in the World Cup final loss to Spain.
Otamendi announced the decision on Instagram, describing the words as the hardest of his career. He expressed pride in representing his country and thanked supporters for the honour of wearing the national shirt.
He earned 139 caps and scored eight goals since his debut in 2009. Otamendi played in four tournaments, including the 2022 World Cup victory and Copa America titles in 2021 and 2024.
The centre-back recently joined River Plate after spells with Porto, Valencia, Manchester City and Benfica. In his message he encouraged current players to keep believing despite setbacks.
Otamendi said he leaves with his head held high after giving his all until the final second of his last match.
