President Cyril Ramaphosa announced he will seek a court review of Parliament’s Section 89 report on the Phala Phala farm theft. He also stated he has no intention of resigning amid growing calls for his impeachment.
Ramaphosa made the announcement on Monday during a national address. The move follows a Constitutional Court ruling last week that found the directives guiding Parliament’s impeachment process unconstitutional.
The Congress of South African Trade Unions welcomed the decision. COSATU spokesperson Zanele Sabela said the president must satisfy himself about questions in the report rather than step down immediately.
National Assembly Speaker Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula has separately begun steps to form an impeachment committee. The committee would question Ramaphosa about the theft at his farm.
