Saints owner defends GM Mickey Loomis amid 2025 struggles

New Orleans Saints owner Gayle Benson has dismissed any talk of firing general manager Mickey Loomis despite the team's 2-8 start to the 2025 season. Benson called the idea 'ridiculous' and emphasized the team's rebuilding mode. She highlighted Loomis' long tenure and past successes.

The New Orleans Saints are enduring a challenging 2025 season, sitting at 2-8 after 10 games and tied with the New York Giants for the worst record in the NFC. Owner Gayle Benson addressed speculation about general manager Mickey Loomis' job security in comments to Jeff Duncan of The Times-Picayune.

"It may not be what the fans want to hear, but as far as firing Mickey Loomis, that's ridiculous," Benson said. "(He) does a great job."

Loomis has been with the Saints since 2000, serving as general manager since 2002 and adding an executive vice president title in 2013. The team last made the playoffs in 2020, and after winning only five games in 2024, criticism has mounted. However, Benson remains supportive, pointing to key decisions like hiring Sean Payton in 2006 and signing Drew Brees.

"I'm very disappointed, as everybody is, but we're in a rebuilding mode," Benson explained. "Mickey said this from the very beginning of the season. ... I understand how fans feel. I really do. And I feel bad for the fans, but we told everybody in the beginning, this was going to be a tough year, and it has been a tough year."

Under new coach Kellen Moore, the roster requires young talent to turn things around. Benson noted Loomis' dedication: "You don't think Mickey Loomis is losing sleep at night over all of this? He is. It's hard. It's not an easy job. It's not like he's sitting on his butt, not worrying about things."

The Giants, meanwhile, fired coach Brian Daboll this week amid their own struggles.
