San Miguel Amatitlán mayor killed after requesting protection

Joel Bravo Martínez, mayor of San Miguel Amatitlán in Oaxaca, was killed on June 13 by an armed group. The official had requested federal protection on May 11 due to threats.

The 53-year-old mayor, elected in 2024 by the PAN-PRI-PRD coalition, stated his fear for his life at a regional security meeting. According to a PAN statement, he requested escorts that never arrived.

Days later on May 22, a commando intercepted his vehicle on the highway, forced him out and beat him along with his team. PAN criticized state authorities for indifference to the reported threat.

The case recalls the killing of Carlos Manzo, former mayor of Uruapan. Data Cívica reports 196 victims of political violence in Oaxaca since 2018, including 12 murdered elected officials between 2025 and 2026.
